Movie Set Monday- Big Little Lies Part One

If you’ve never heard of Big Little Lies, get  yourself to a library or to Amazon RIGHT NOW and get the book. Read it in the day and a half it’ll take you because you will absolutely not want to put it down, have yourself a day to process what just happened, then binge watch the series on HBO. You’re welcome.

The book takes place in Australia, but the series takes place in Monterey, California. I’m convinced there wasn’t a more beautiful backdrop for the show. You’ll see what I mean when you see the views from the characters’ homes. Today we’re taking a peek into Madeline Mackenzie’s home. Reese Witherspoon plays this character, and if you’ve seen the show you know that this kitchen is spectacular.

These are pictures of the kitchen without the decor from the show.

First, the island. It’s massive, seats five, has a farmhouse sink and dishwasher built in, and sits beautifully under the sky light. As if the wall of windows wasn’t enough, let’s add a sky light to make it even brighter and more beautiful.

Now let’s see the set design.

Most noticeably, the barstools have changed from modern black leather to traditional white wood.  Both look very nice, though I prefer the white ones. The other noticeable change is the addition of appliances and utensils. It’s supposed to look like a used and lived-in kitchen. Many of the scenes are shot around this island and in this room. And why not? It’s gorgeous. I really like the Beach sign. Perfect placement and perfect decor for a beach front home.

This view, y’all. Can you imagine having your coffee there every morning?

The photo below is a living space in the lower level of the house. The windows and ocean are truly the best part of this home. Even at night. I do like how the rounded couch is used in such an angular space, though. I think it softens it a bit.

Below is the master bedroom complete with a beautiful, white fireplace and very well-lit (with natural light, ladies) dressing area. I love how the outdoors is a part of each room of the house, either with windows or doors. I would think it was totally normal to open up the door when you’re getting ready for a school gala, right?

Now for the exterior. We don’t see the front of the house, but why would we need to? I like the glass wall on the top level balcony. It allows for unobstructed views of the ocean, which is absolutely key. The bottom picture is what the house looks like on a listing and is taken at a closer view. I can envision many dinner parties and celebrations out there. I can also imagine my morning coffee, quiet time, and even Taco Tuesdays at home. I might never leave.

Isn’t it dreamy? A total west coast, California-cool home. I love it!

So what do you think? Gorgeous, right? Come back next Monday for Part Two from Big Little Lies.
