Crafty Earring DIY Round 2

Hi, friends! Summer always puts me in a crafty mood. I’m currently trying to figure out how I can rearrange my spare bedroom by myself while Paul’s at work. Though it won’t really matter when he gets home because his leg is broken. I’ve got some brainstorming to do…

Back to the real crafting. I am such an accessories girl. Give me all the earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings. You name it, and I likely want it. I usually do an annual purge of my jewelry, and in my last one I decided to keep this pair of earrings even though I wasn’t wearing them.

I had plans for these guys. I’m not a stranger to upcycling a pair of earrings. Remember these?

They started with some clearance earrings from Walmart. I already had the thread and still do. My Granny used to sew…and collect…so I ended up with a big box of thread after she passed away. I’m having a real red moment lately, but I don’t typically wear red, so I decided to make an accessory to get my fix. (Full disclosure- I also bought a red dress.)

The How-To

Ok, so like I said, I started with the silver earrings that I was no longer wearing. Next, I made the tassels. I wanted to try to make them a little thinner than the last time, so I separated the thread into three strands per tassel. I folded the three strands end to end several times until I got them the desired size then tied them with a strand of the same red thread. Then I strung them on a thinner red strand.

Next I started wrapping the thread around the actual earrings. I secured with super glue and hot glue. I had a little mishap with the super glue pen. You may have caught that on my Instastories the day it happened. Geez…some days I feel rather smart…others, I can’t figure out how to work a super glue pen. Anyway, I secured the back with the glue.
I also too the strand of tassels and glued them along the bottom with super glue and around the back with hot glue.

You can see the hot glue, but the earrings stay facing forward, and I rarely wear my hair up, so I’m not too worried about it. I do recommend using the super glue over the hot glue, though.

Just the right pop of color for an otherwise neutral outfit.

The Why

I mentioned this same thing the last time I made a pair of earrings: I have expensive taste and don’t always want to spend $30 or more on a pair of earrings- especially when there are shoes to buy! 🙂

The point is, using your creativity can get your brain working in ways that you never knew it could. Ask any artist. Something great happens to you when you start to create something. They may not be Baublebar quality, but who cares? I made them, I’m happy about them, and I’ve enjoyed wearing them.

It’s time for you to upcycle something you don’t wear anymore. Maybe it’s an old sweatshirt- cut the neck out and make a cute off the shoulder sweater fit for summer. Wrap some thread around some old bangles and make some colorful arm candy. Get your kids involved. It’s summer; they need something to do! 🙂

So what are y’all creating this summer? Are you getting crafty? Tell me about it. Hope y’all are having a fabulous Friday and that your weekend is wonderful!
